The Former Hino Clinic, located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, is a historic structure built in 1894 (Meiji 27). The two-story building, consisting of a main building and a ward, was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1999. It is a premier example of 'Giyofu' architecture—a style where Western architectural forms are blended with traditional Japanese techniques. Visitors can admire the Western-inspired design, featuring an arched entrance porch, an internal spiral staircase, and a balcony, while also discovering unique Japanese elements such as Unryu (cloud dragon) carvings and traditional Kote-e (plaster relief) decorations.
The clinic carries a legacy preserved by a lineage of physicians dating back to the Edo period. The current structure was built in 1894 by Kaname Hino, the third generation of the family. It is recognized as one of the oldest Western-style buildings in Oita Prefecture. This site serves as a precious cultural heritage that illustrates the development of both architectural technology and medical practices during the Meiji era, a pivotal time when modern medicine began to spread throughout Japan.
Inside the building, numerous exhibits provide a window into the daily life and medical practices of the era. The examination rooms are furnished with period-appropriate items, such as vintage beds and early X-ray machines, allowing visitors to visually grasp the dawn of modern medicine. Other fascinating details include displays of calligraphy by notable figures and a garden pond designed to look like specific characters when viewed from above. The striking contrast between the Western-style arched porch and the intricate Japanese interior decorations makes this a truly unique visual experience.

As this is a historic building, please be mindful of your footing. The site contains stairs and uneven surfaces, so wearing comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended. To protect the precious artifacts and the structure itself, please follow all posted rules regarding photography. Admission fees are 300 JPY for high school students and adults, and 150 JPY for elementary and junior high school students. It is also recommended to check the operating hours and closed days (Mondays, Tuesdays, and New Year holidays) before your visit.
