The Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a magnificent colonial-style Western building completed in 1910. Designed by Asajiro Konishi, the structure is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Located in the Motomachi district of Hakodate, it is renowned for its striking architecture that vividly preserves the atmosphere of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Inside, visitors can admire a collection of exquisite furniture and interior decor that transports you back in time.
Completed in 1910, this facility has served as a central venue for community gatherings and social events for over a century. In 1974, its immense historical and architectural value was officially recognized with its designation as a National Important Cultural Property. The building stands as a symbol of the era when Hakodate flourished as an international port city, blending Japanese and Western influences.
The interior features a stunning display of furniture and decorative items that represent the culture of the early 20th century. The elegant colonial-style architectural structure and intricate ornamental designs are the primary attractions. Additionally, the facility houses the "Haikara Costume Museum," where visitors can experience the fashion of the era firsthand.
Opening hours vary depending on the season. During the Summer season (April 1 to October 31), the hall is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours until 7:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. During the Winter season (November 1 to March 31), the closing time is-moved up to 5:00 PM. Please check the schedule in advance as closing times change seasonally. The facility is closed during the New Year holidays (December 31 to January 3).
Visitors are welcome to take commemorative photographs within this historic space. The hall also accommodates professional photography requests, such as wedding photography. The Costume Museum offers a unique way to experience the style of the Meiji and Taisho eras (please check the official website for specific details).
The Hakodate Motomachi area is dotted with many historic buildings. Nearby landmarks include the Former British Consulate (Kaikai Memorial Hall), the Northern Peoples Museum, and various literary museums. A special combined ticket system is available, allowing you to visit these sites using your admission ticket from the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall.
When taking photos inside the building, please be mindful of the privacy of other visitors and staff; ensure no one else is captured in your shots. Photography, video recording, and live streaming are strictly prohibited inside the Costume Museum. Furthermore, photography while wearing the costumes is not permitted outside the building. For your comfort, we recommend wearing walking-friendly shoes as you will be exploring a historic structure. Please note that payments at the Costume Museum must be made in cash.
