The Former British Consulate is a precious architectural landmark that conveys the historical depth of Hakodate. Originally, the British consulate was located in a different area (near the current Orthodox Church), but due to factors such as fires, the consulate was relocated. A new consulate was built near the current site in 1885, and the present building was finally completed in 1913. After serving its role as a consulate, it underwent various transitions, including use as a hospital after World War II, and is now open to the public as a museum.
