Okusukega Nature Park is a serene natural park located in the upper reaches of the Susobana River in Kinasato, Nagano City. The area is characterized by its rich biodiversity, consisting of five distinct ponds, wetlands, and waterways. Its most striking feature is the massive colony of skunk cabbage (Mizubasho), which is one of the largest in Honshu. Recognized as one of Japan's "100 Best Hidden Gems," the park offers a breathtaking sight as the white flowers emerge alongside the spring snowmelt, creating a mesmerizing landscape against the lush greenery.
The region has long been preserved to protect its pristine natural environment. Situated at the headwaters of the Susobana River, the sprawling beech forests represent a precious natural heritage that embodies the original scenery of Japan. The area is carefully managed to protect the ecosystem of the Mizubasho, ensuring that this spectacular natural display can be enjoyed for generations. The seasonal shifts in the landscape reflect the profound and enduring beauty of Japan's natural heritage.
Visitors can explore several distinct areas within the park, including Hyotan Pond, Yoshi Pond, Ima Pond, and the Koumihei Wetland, each offering a unique perspective of nature. During the peak Mizubasho season, the vast wetlands are blanketed in white flowers, a sight that draws nature enthusiasts from far and wide. The interplay between the deep green of the beech forests and the crystal-clear mountain water provides a tranquil and refreshing atmosphere.
The most recommended time to visit is from late April to early June. The peak bloom of the skunk cabbage usually occurs around the Golden Week period (late April to early May), offering the best chance to see the massive white colonies. In May, you can truly feel the vitality of nature as the snow melts. It is highly recommended to hike during daylight hours (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM). As the park lacks streetlights, please ensure you finish your walk before sunset. Depending on the season, some snow may still remain, so please check the weather conditions before your trip.
Enjoy a peaceful trek along well-maintained mountain paths. From the sightseeing bus center, it is approximately a 20-minute walk (or a 5-minute shuttle bus ride) to the park entrance. From there, you can wander toward the wetlands and ponds to fully immerse yourself in the sounds of the forest and the fresh mountain air. It is a perfect place for slow-paced nature observation and photography.
The park is surrounded by the beautiful Okusukega Valley and the Okusukega Dam, with the scenic Susobana River flowing through the area. Since the area is best accessed by car, we recommend planning a driving route that includes other natural attractions in the Nagano City area. Parking facilities are available near the visitor center.
As the park contains unpaved paths and stairs, sturdy walking shoes (such as trekking shoes or sneakers) are essential. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for light hiking. Payments for parking are made in cash at the toll booth located past the entrance. As this is a protected natural area, please follow local etiquette: do not pick plants and ensure you carry all trash back with you. Please note that the terrain is not wheelchair accessible.
