Okusa Castle Ruins Park, located in Nakagawa Village, Nagano Prefecture, is a scenic park centered around the remains of a flatland mountain castle. The park has been developed on the site of Okusa Castle, which played a vital role during the Nanboku-cho period (Northern and Southern Courts era). Today, it serves as a place where historical remains and lush nature coexist beautifully. The most striking feature is the breathtaking view of the majestic Central Alps in the background, which draws many visitors and photographers.
Okusa Castle was a strategic stronghold for the Kosaka clan, who ruled the territories of Ooka and Nakagawa during the Nanboku-cho period. Kosaka Takamune famously welcomed and protected Prince Soryo of the Southern Court at this location. Under the Prince's leadership, the castle served as a crucial military and economic base to confront Northern Court forces across the Tenryu River. After the castle was abandoned following the Oda clan's invasion of Ina in 1581, the site transitioned through various historical eras and is now a beautifully maintained historical park.
The park features various structures that showcase the layout of the historical castle ruins alongside rich vegetation. A major highlight is the scenery of cherry blossoms set against the lingering snow of the Central Alps, a favorite spot for professional photographers. The park is divided into several areas, including the "Cherry Blossom Plaza," "Four Seasons Plaza," and "Lawn Plaza," allowing visitors to enjoy different perspectives of the landscape. You can also find a monument dedicated to Prince Soryo, which tells the deep story of this land's history.
With over 200 cherry trees including varieties like Somei Yoshino and Edo Heigan Sakura, the park boasts a relatively long blooming season due to the different flowering times of the species. In spring, the contrast between the white snow of the Central Alps and the pink blossoms is truly spectacular. In the past, the area has also hosted special events such as night-time illuminations and local market festivals.
The park is designed for relaxing strolls amidst nature while learning about the architectural history of the castle. The wide-open lawn areas are perfect for a peaceful walk. Okusa Castle Ruins Park is situated in the Ina Valley region of southern-central Nagano. The surrounding Nakagawa Village area is known for its rich natural beauty and traditional atmosphere. For travelers, the most common way to reach the area is via the JR Iida Line.
