Okura Dam is a magnificent double-arch concrete dam situated in the Okura district of Aoba Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. This multi-purpose dam plays a crucial role in flood control, agricultural water supply, providing water to Sendai and Shiogama cities, and generating hydroelectric power. Standing at a height of 82 meters, its structure is beautifully integrated into the surrounding natural landscape. The area surrounding the Okura Lake reservoir features various parks, former school facilities, and community centers, offering a peaceful space to experience local history and nature.
The construction of Okkura Dam involved complex historical negotiations between Miyagi Prefecture and Sendai City. Originally part of the Okura River Water Source Expansion Project, it was eventually established as a national project under the Natori River System Comprehensive Development Plan. Completed in 1961, the dam is currently managed by Miyagi Prefecture. The process of building the dam involved intricate steps, including compensation negotiations with local residents and the modification of existing power plants, reflecting the significant effort required to develop regional infrastructure.
The most striking feature of Okura Dam is its double-arch structure. The design, featuring two layers of concrete arches, is a testament to advanced civil engineering techniques. Visitors can enjoy the waterfront scenery at the Dam Lakeside Park or the Downstream Park. For example, upstream from the dam lies the historic area of "Definition Nyorai" (Definition Nyora), a popular pilgrimage site. The north side of the lake features the former Okura Elementary School, while the south side hosts the Ogara Furusato Center, both deeply connected to the local community.
