Okuhida Kuma Bokujo is a specialized bear zoo located in the Shin-Hirayu Onsen area of the Okuhida Onsen village in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. It is renowned for its significant scale in breeding Asiatic black bears, housing approximately 90 bears in total. Guided by the philosophy of 'Encountering the bears of the forest,' the facility offers a unique environment where you can observe the natural behaviors and ecology of these animals up close within a lush, natural setting.
Established in 1976, this facility has dedicated decades to the breeding and exhibition of bears. While it has previously featured species such as Kodiak brown bears and raccoons, the facility currently specializes in the display and education of the Asiatic black bear. Beyond mere entertainment, the center plays a vital role in sharing knowledge about bear ecology with the public.
The facility features several specialized areas, including the 'Mori no Kuma Stadium' (Forest Bear Stadium), an all-weather facility used for educational presentations and shows. One of the most captivating highlights is the 'Learning Presentation' (Bear Show). Watching bears perform tasks like identifying numbers, riding bicycles, using swings, or even riding tricycles and performing handstands is a rare and mesmerizing sight that draws visitors from all ages. Additionally, the on-site Photo Studio allows you to capture a lifetime memory with a bear cub; even if you didn't bring your own camera, the staff can assist with the process using food as an incentive. The facility also displays taxidermy exhibits for a deeper look at the animals.
While the facility operates year-round, the experience changes with the seasons. From spring to autumn, the presence of young cubs is a major highlight. Around May, you can often see several-month-old cubs, offering a precious chance to see them grow. Because the 'Mori no Kuma Stadium' is an all-weather facility, the shows can be enjoyed even during the snowy winter months.
Visitors can engage directly with the animals through feeding experiences using cookies or dried fruits, providing a sense of connection to their natural diet. The Photo Studio offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to pose with a bear cub. For a souvenir, visit the 'Kuma no Sato' shop, which sells unique local products such as items made from bear oil and the famous 'Kuma-ryoku' (Bear Power) energy drink.
The zoo is situated in the scenic Shin-Hirayu Onsen area. This location is ideal for travelers looking to combine a visit to the bear farm with a relaxing soak in a hot spring or a walk through the mountains. It is easily accessible via routes from Takayama or Matsumoto.
