Okutono Jinya is a cultural facility in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, that preserves the history of the former Okutono Jinya (the administrative office and residence of a local lord). Today, it serves as a museum showcasing historical Shoin-style architecture, a beautiful Japanese garden, and regional historical artifacts. In 1985, a historical Shoin-style building was relocated and reconstructed here to serve as a tourism facility. Surrounded by lush nature, the site offers a peaceful atmosphere where you can experience traditional Japanese architectural beauty and garden design.
The roots of this site date back to the Edo period. The history began when Matsudaira Shinji, a retainer to Tokugawa Hidetada, established a residence in Omae (present-day Toyota City). The current Jinya in Okutono, Okazaki, was completed in 1707. The facility's architecture is a precious cultural asset; the Shoin-style building was originally relocated from the Ryokei-in temple in Okazaki. Furthermore, the site holds historical significance due to Matsudaira Norimuro, one of the former lords, who played a vital role in the establishment of the predecessor to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Inside the facility, you can explore various exhibits that illustrate life and culture during the Edo period. Glass cases display ancient documents, photographs, ceramics, and various tools from the era, providing a visual journey through regional history. The architecture itself is a highlight, featuring a warm interior illuminated by traditional Washi paper pendant lights and the elegant texture of wooden structures. The beautiful Japanese garden outside is also a must-see; with its ponds, water features, and diverse plant life, the garden offers a different aesthetic with every season, creating a harmonious landscape with the architecture.
Visiting during different seasons is highly recommended to enjoy the changing scenery. The beauty of the Japanese garden is particularly striking during the spring (April–May) when new life sprouts, and in the autumn (October–November) when the foliage turns vibrant colors. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to see the light filtering through the windows and highlighting the details of the architecture. For those seeking tranquility, weekday mornings are ideal as they are less crowded.

Beyond simple sightseeing, you can enjoy moments of relaxation in a traditional Japanese setting. Spend a quiet moment gazing at the Shoin architecture or the garden. The facility also includes a shop and dining area where you can take a break while experiencing local flavors. Through the museum exhibits, you can deepen your understanding of the culture of Japanese samurai and local lords.
Okutono Jinya is part of the Muratsumiyama Natural Park, an area rich in greenery. You can explore historical walking routes that feature remnants of old fortifications (earthworks) and historical burial sites. Nearby, you can also enjoy attractions like the rose garden, combining nature walks with historical exploration.

As this is a historical site, please be mindful of your surroundings. The facility contains steps and uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please treat the historical buildings and exhibits with respect.
