Okubara Tsutsuji-en is a beautiful botanical garden located near the center of Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, designed to maximize the natural topography of the land. The garden's most striking feature is the vast collection of over 50,000 plants, including azaleas, western rhododendors, and peonies. The roots of this garden are deeply historical, inheriting the traditions of the 'strolling garden' style that dates back to the Muromachi period. The history of the azaleas carefully nurtured here traces back approximately 300 years. Legend has it that the tradition began when a group of high-ranking officials from the Aizu Clan, traveling back from Edo, were so moved by the beauty of the azaleas that they presented them to the local landowner. For generations, the passion of families who have protected and cultivated these beautiful blossoms has shaped the expansive botanical garden we see today. This commitment to preserving nature and tradition is what sustains the spectacular views.
The garden offers a view that fills your entire field of vision with beauty. The most iconic sight is the panorama of blooming azaleas covering the hills. Visitors can also enjoy the seasonal colors of western rhododendors and peonies. To enhance your relaxation, the garden features several spots to rest, such as the 'Higashi-goya' (East Hut) where you can feel the natural breeze, and a free rest area housed in a 150-year-old traditional Japanese folk house. These open spaces allow you to feel the energy of nature while enjoying the scenery in peace.
The best time to visit Okubara Tsutsuji-en is from mid-April to early June. During this period, the azaleas, rhododendors, and peonies are in full bloom, offering the most spectacular and colorful scenery. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended for photography, as the air is crisp and the colors of the flowers appear particularly vivid in the soft light. While the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, please note that opening periods may vary based on weather and seasonal changes. It is always a good idea to check the latest blooming status before your visit.
Beyond just viewing the flowers, you can enjoy a leisurely pace using the garden's facilities. For example, at the rest area—a renovated 150-year-old traditional house—you can sit on the tatami mats and gaze at the scenery through the veranda, which many call a 'living picture frame' of azaleas. There is also an on-site dining area serving ramen, udon, and soba, as well as light snacks like soft-serve ice cream and grilled dango (sweet dumplings). Enjoying a meal surrounded by nature makes your sightseeing experience even more memorable. Additionally, the souvenir shop offers seasonal plants and local specialties.
Located in Sukagawa City, Fukushima, the garden is easily accessible via major roads like the Tohoku Expressway and Route 4. Because the garden is quite large and involves walking up and down hills, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing. It is also wise to bring a hat for sun protection and water for hydration. The garden provides free parking for approximately 400 standard cars and 20 large buses.
