Okutamaiko Station is a scenic stop on the Oigawa Railway Ikawa Line, located in Kawanehon, Shizuoka. The station was relocated to its current position following the construction of the Nagashima Dam in 1990. Situated at an altitude of 490m on the edge of Lake Susono (a reservoir formed by the dam), the platform appears to float above the water, creating a breathtaking and unique landscape. Surrounded by the massive 'Rainbow Bridges,' the station feels like a secluded island in the mountains, earning it a reputation as a true 'hidden gem' station. Because there is very little artificial light nearby, special 'Starry Sky Trains' are sometimes operated to allow travelers to enjoy the incredible view of the night sky.
The station's history is tied to the dam construction that required the relocation of the original rail line. In 2001, it was selected as one of the 'Top 100 Stations in Central Japan,' highlighting its importance to Japanese railway culture. Its unique beauty has also earned it international recognition, including a Cool Japan Award in 2019. The station is affectionately known as the 'Okutamaiko Love Lock Station.' This name comes from the 'Love Lock Box' located on the platform, where couples can lock a padlock to symbolize their eternal love. This tradition of celebrating romance through the local natural landscape has made the station a special destination for many.
The greatest draw is the open view from the platform overlooking the dam lake. The sight of the two massive iron bridges (Rainbow Bridges) flanking the station and the tranquil water below attracts both railway enthusiasts and photographers alike. On the platform, you can also find the 'Happy Happy Bell,' a bell meant to call in happiness. Additionally, the 'Love Lock Box' provides a romantic ritual for couples to leave a token of their affection. For a relaxing break, the nearby Lake Cottage Okudai offers a rest area on the first floor and an observation deck on the second floor to enjoy the panoramic scenery.
The scenery is beautiful year-round, but the contrast between the blue lake and the lush greenery is particularly striking during the fresh green season. For a truly magical experience, look for the 'Starry Sky Train' services, which take advantage of the lack of light pollution to offer an unparalleled view of the stars. Please note that traveling at night can be difficult due to the lack of streetlights, so it is essential to check the train schedules in advance.
Visitors can enjoy walking and hiking through the rich natural surroundings. The Oigawa Railway offers a hiking route from Okutamaiko Station to Sesoga Onsen Station, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature. A unique cultural activity is using the special 'Love Lock' (a set of key and padlock) to participate in the station's love-binding tradition. You can also take a break at facilities like Lake Cottage Okudai to enjoy the peaceful environment.
The area is dotted with natural landmarks like Mt. Tenguishi. For a great view, you can head slightly up from the station to Lake Cottage Okudai. Regarding access, while there is parking available along Prefectural Road 388, please be aware that it is a 15 to 20-minute walk along a mountain path to reach the station, so plan your journey with plenty of time.
Since the station is located in a mountainous area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. The path from the parking area involves stairs and uneven terrain, so sneakers are a must. For those using the Oigawa Railway, please ensure you have cash ready for your fare. While photography is permitted, please be respectful of other passengers and the natural environment.
