Okinogerale Island is a beautiful part of the Amami Islands located in Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Situated north of Okinawa Island, it is renowned for its opportunities to encounter wildlife such as sea turtles and humpback whales. The island maintains a pristine natural environment, making it a premier destination for activities like scuba diving and caving (exploring sea caves).
The island's name has a long-standing history; in 1973, the mayor of Wakamizu Town officially confirmed "Okinogerale-jima" as the formal designation. The island is divided into two municipalities: Wakamizu and Chinmi. The history of the people living in harmony with nature continues to shape the local culture and traditions today.

Okinogerale Island is divided into the Wakamizu and Chinmi areas. For movement within the island, the Okinogerale Bus Enterprise operates the local lines. While the Airport Line and the Chinmi/Kun head Line run throughout the day, other routes may only operate in the mornings or require a reservation for afternoon
