Okichan Theater is a dedicated facility for dolphin performances located within the National Okinawa Memorial Park (Ocean Expo Park) in Okinawa Prefecture. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Okinawa sea, Pacific bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and short-beaked common dolphins showcase their incredible athletic abilities through high-energy performances. More than just a show, the program includes educational commentary on dolphin biology and behavior, offering visitors a chance to deepen their understanding of marine life.
Ocean Expo Park was developed following the hosting of the 1975 Okinawa International Oceanographic Exposition. As a key facility within this historic park, Okichan Theater has long played a vital role in communicating the richness of Okinawa's marine culture and natural environment. Through the sight of these dolphins, the theater serves as a platform to foster interest in marine biology and ocean conservation.
The greatest thrill is witnessing the dynamic movements of the dolphins. The powerful jumps high above the water, rhythmic dances, and even vocal interactions between the dolphins create an overwhelming and awe-inspiring experience for spectators. Additionally, the educational segments provide fascinating insights into their natural habitats and survival skills. Because the stage is set against the natural emerald green of the sea and sky, the visual experience is exceptionally beautiful and immersive.
While the theater is enjoyable year-round, visiting during Okinawa's sunny seasons makes the blue of the ocean appear even more vivid, making it a perfect time for photography. The shows are typically held five times a day (10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00). Depending on the time of day, the way light hits the water changes the transparency and color of the sea, offering different visual charms. Beyond the main show, the surrounding area offers various ways to interact with marine life. For instance, nearby facilities sometimes offer programs like dolphin feeding experiences. The Ocean Expo Park area is also home to the Sea Turtle House and Manatee House, allowing you to experience the richness of Okinawa's oceans from multiple perspectives through a full day of exploration.
Many fascinating attractions, including the famous Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, are clustered around Okichan Theater. You can explore the Tropical Dream Center and other exhibition facilities within walking distance, making it easy to spend an entire day enjoying the park. The nearby Emerald Beach area also offers beautiful coastal scenery to enjoy after the show.
As this is an open-air facility, we recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Since there is a possibility of getting splashed by water during the show, wearing clothes that can easily get wet and bringing a waterproof case for your smartphone or electronic devices is highly recommended. To ensure the safety of the animals, please never throw objects into the water. Even small dropped items can be dangerous if ingested by the dolphins. Additionally, please arrive early, as entry restrictions may be implemented if the seating reaches full capacity.
