Dogo is the primary island of the Oki Islands, located in Oki Town, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture. Covering an area of approximately 241.64 km² with a coastline of about 211 km, it serves as the administrative center for the Oki Islands. The island is characterized by a stunning natural environment, featuring dramatic coastlines, secluded coves, lush forests, and mountains. Iconic scenic spots such as the Shirashima Coast and Jodogahura, alongside historic shrines, create a unique landscape where nature and culture blend seamlessly.
The history of Dogo is deep and storied. Under the ancient Ritsuryo system, the island was divided into the Shuki and Ochi districts. Local legends tell of Emperor Go-Daigo, who was exiled to the Oki Islands during the Nanboku-cho period, and it is said he once visited Oki Kokubun-ji Temple. Since the Meiji era, the administrative structure has evolved, eventually integrating into the modern Oki Town. This region has long held significant geographical and historical importance in Japanese history.
Dogo offers numerous spots to enjoy the beauty of natural formations. The Shirashima Coast, with its breathtaking coastal lines, and Jodogahura, known for its crystal-clear waters and striking rock formations, are must-see locations. The island is also home to sacred sites like Tamamurasunomiko Shrine and Mizuwakasunomiko Shrine, which appear to be naturally integrated into the landscape. Additionally, facilities such as the Oki Folklore Museum allow visitors to delve deeper into the local history and culture.
Visitors can experience a different side of Dogo depending on the season. While most natural landscapes are open year-round, it is best to visit when the weather is stable to fully enjoy the coastal views. The bright daylight hours are ideal for sightseeing, as the colors of the coastline and sea appear most vivid. At night, the island offers a peaceful environment perfect for stargazing and enjoying the silence of nature.
Primary activities include walking through nature and admiring the coastal scenery. Exploring secluded coves, beaches, and forest shrines provides a tranquil escape from daily life. To reach the island, you can use Oki Airport or Saigo Port. Once on the island, it is highly recommended to use local buses or rental cars to navigate the various natural sites and scenic routes.
Surrounding Dogo are the Dogo-mae islands (including Nishinoshima, Nakanoshima, and Chiburijima). Other nearby islands such as Omori, Mitsumine, Matsushima, Okinoshima, and the famous Candle Island (Rousoku Island) form the diverse island-chain topography of the Oki Islands. Saigo Port serves as the main transport hub, with regular ferry routes connecting to various other ports.
