Okazaki Castle is a significant historical fortress located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is celebrated as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of Japan's most influential shoguns. The site features a reconstructed castle keep and the Higashisumi Yagura tower, which was rebuilt to faithfully replicate Edo-period construction methods. The castle grounds are maintained as Okazaki Castle Park, providing a beautiful space where visitors can learn about the history of the region as a vital hub along the Tokaido road through various historical exhibits.
The history of Okazaki Castle dates back to the 15th century with its construction by the Saigo clan. Originally built as a flatland mountain castle, it was later refined by the Matsudaira clan, including Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the ancestor of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1542, the future Tokugawa Ieyasu (then known as Takechiyo) was born in this very location. During the Edo period, the castle served as a crucial stronghold for the Tokugawa family's vassals. Although the structures were once removed due to the castle abolition order in 1873, the 3-story, 5-level reinforced concrete keep was reconstructed in 1959. Additionally, the Higashisumi Yagura was rebuilt in 2010 using traditional Edo-period designs, preserving the historical landscape of the castle.
The most prominent feature is the reconstructed castle keep, which offers an inside look at the castle's history and development through various exhibits. Another highlight is the Higashisumi Yagura, rebuilt in 2010; it features a classic two-story wooden structure with white plaster walls and traditional tiled roofing. Visitors can also observe the surviving stone walls and moats, which provide a visual understanding of the original scale and structural evolution of Japanese fortifications.

In spring, the surrounding park is a beautiful spot for cherry blossom viewing, while the autumn foliage provides a spectacular backdrop.
