The history of Nishikigoi dates back to the early 19th century during the Bunka and Bunsei eras of the Edo period. It is said that the tradition began when colorful variations appeared in the common carp that were originally raised for food in the areas of present-day Ojiya and Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture. Through the rigorous research and continuous refinement by many dedicated breeders within the snowy environment of Ojiya, the craft has been perfected. Today, Ojiya holds a prestigious brand status for Nishikigoi, earning high acclaim both within Japan and internationally.
Inside the facility, you can observe a wide variety of Nishikigoi species. In the indoor tanks, you can get a much closer look at the intricate patterns and vivid colors of the fish as they glide gracefully through the water. Additionally, the outdoor garden features well-maintained ponds, allowing you to enjoy the sight of the koi swimming in a naturalistic setting. During seasonal exhibitions and competitions, high-quality Nishikigoi are gathered, offering a rare chance to witness the pinnacle of Japanese breeding technology and artistry.
While Nishikigoi are on display throughout the year, the experience changes with the seasons. Special exhibitions are held in the spring and autumn. In spring, you can witness the 'Echigo Ojiya Tatekoi 品折会' (Tatekoi Exhibition), featuring 'Tatekoi'—fish that have successfully survived the harsh winter. In autumn, the facility hosts the 'Niigata Nishikigoi Exhibition,' part of the National Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Festival, showcasing the finest Nishikigoi from across Niigata Prefecture. Visiting during these times allows you to see the highest level of craftsmanship in these living jewels.
The facility offers a hands-on koi feeding experience. By feeding them, you can watch the Nishikigoi gather at the water's surface in a spectacular display. Please note that the sale of food is limited in quantity and will end once the stock is depleted. Additionally, food sales may be restricted depending on the season or the health management of the fish, so we recommend checking the status of availability upon arrival.
Ojiya City is home to various other historical structures and scenic natural spots.
