Oitani Rice Terraces is a celebrated scenic spot located in Yoshika Town, Shimane Prefecture, officially recognized as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan.' Spanning an area of approximately 10 hectares, the landscape is defined by a series of rice paddies constructed with traditional stone walls. While historical records suggest there were once over 1,000 paddies covering 17 hectares during the Edo period, the current landscape consists of about 630 beautifully maintained stone-walled terraces. This site is a quintessential symbol of Japan's traditional rural scenery, where human ingenuity harmonizes perfectly with the natural terrain.
The history of these terraces is remarkably deep, with much of the structure dating back to the Muromachi period and the subsequent eras of feudal rule. Having survived for approximately 600 years, the stone walls have been meticulously repaired and maintained through generations to preserve their current form. The quality of the rice grown here was historically so high that it was famously presented as tribute to the lords of the Tsuwano Domain. This site is a living testament to the enduring culture of rice cultivation and the ancient stone-stacking techniques passed down through the centuries.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking panoramic view of the stone-walled terraces as seen from the observation deck. The way the paddies follow the natural contours of the mountain slope creates a stunning, layered effect of natural geometry. The sight of the multiple tiers of rice fields, separated by rugged stone walls, is a unique spectacle found only in this region. Additionally, the local climate—characterized by significant temperature shifts between day and night and ample sunlight—provides the perfect environment for high-quality rice production.

The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and offers several points of interest. You can enjoy the clear waters of the Takatsu River at 'Suigen Park,' relax at the 'Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra,' or explore the charming atmosphere of the former castle town, 'Tsuwano.' A scenic driving route through these nearby spots, including local cafes and hot springs, is highly recommended after your visit to the terraces.
To reach the observation deck, you will need to climb wooden stairs. As the footing can be uneven, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since the area is a natural environment, please dress appropriately for the season. While photography is free and encouraged, please be respectful and avoid obstructing any ongoing agricultural work. As there are no onsite payment facilities for the view itself, please note that this is a free-access scenic area. For any nearby facilities, please check their specific rules in advance.
