Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM) is a public art institution located in Kotobuki-cho, Oita City. The building is designed to seamlessly integrate urban functionality with artistic expression. The museum hosts regular collection exhibitions as well as special exhibitions featuring both domestic and international artists. While the museum is generally open daily, it offers extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays until 20:00. On weekdays, it remains open until 19:00 (last entry at 18:30). This makes it an excellent destination for evening culture. Regardless of the season, the interior maintains a strictly controlled environment for art preservation. Visiting during the late-night hours allows you to enjoy the exhibits in a more relaxed atmosphere, away from the daytime crowds.
Beyond viewing exhibitions, parts of the facility are available for rental, such as training rooms and ateliers, subject to specific terms and procedures. Educational programs and guided observations are also part of the museum's mission, though prior application may be required for certain school-based educational activities. The primary focus remains on the deep observation and learning through art.
The museum is conveniently located near "Oasis Hiroba 21" and is easily accessible from Oita Station. It is approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Oita Station, or a very short walk from the "Oasis Hiroba-mae" bus stop. The area is a central hub with many local facilities, making it highly accessible for travelers.
To protect the artworks, photography restrictions and specific etiquette rules are in place within the galleries. While standard casual attire is perfectly fine, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that cash may be required for purchasing tickets for certain exhibitions. For those traveling by car, an EV charger (CHAdeMO) is available in the underground parking lot; please note that the charging fee is payable in cash only (new 500-yen coins and banknotes are not accepted).
