Oirase Keiryu is a breathtaking mountain stream located in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, stretching from the eastern shore of Lake Towada toward Yakeyama. Designated as a National Special Scenic Spot and a Natural Monument, the landscape is a true work of art sculpted by nature. You can experience the vibrant vitality of the environment up close, from the pure running water and numerous waterfalls to the diverse varieties of moss covering rocks and fallen trees. While you can visit various points by bus or car, walking along the dedicated nature trails allows for a much deeper connection with the breath of the forest.
This area has been celebrated for its natural beauty since ancient times. In 1928, the area along with Lake Towada was designated as a Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. Its prestige was further recognized in 1952 when it was elevated to a National Special Scenic Spot. The history of the stream is also one of careful stewardship; while the waters from Lake Towada have been utilized for power generation and irrigation, the region has maintained a delicate balance through meticulous management to preserve its natural ecosystem.
The stream is dotted with numerous spectacular sights. In the upper reaches, the powerful "Choshi Otaki" waterfall (7m high, 20m wide) and the 15m drop of "Kudan no Taki" create a dramatic atmosphere known as the "Waterfall Highway." In the middle reaches, dynamic landscapes like the "Ashura Rapids" and "Kumoi no Taki" showcase the interplay of water and topography. As you move toward the lower reaches, the river widens, surrounded by lush forests of beech and horse chestnut trees. The shifting light on the water's surface and the emerald tunnels of sunlight filtering through the canopy continue to enchant every visitor.
