Oike Wild Bird Forest is a vast 115-hectare natural area situated at the foot of Mount Takachiho in Miyaki Prefecture. Established in 1972, it is one of only four national wild bird forests in Japan, designed to balance nature conservation with wildlife observation. The area is covered in dense evergreen broad-leaved forests, including species like oak and evergreen trees, creating a rich habitat for diverse flora and fauna alongside the stunning crater lake known as Miike. With well-maintained walking paths and observation hides, visitors can enjoy the changing beauty of nature throughout the seasons.
Located at the base of the sacred Mount Takachiho, this region has a long history of coexistence with nature. Local legend tells of 'Koshi Port,' a place where Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan, is said to have played by the water during his childhood. To preserve the delicate ecosystem and provide a sanctuary for migratory birds, the area was developed as a national wild bird forest. This commitment to conservation ensures that the natural landscape remains a pristine site for both ecological study and peaceful observation.
There are several iconic spots within Oike Wild Bird Forest. The 'Wild Bird Observation Hide' is a must-visit; it provides an ideal environment to spot many of the 151 recorded species, including the vibrant red Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. Nearby, water stations for birds are also available. Another highlight is the 'Giant of the Forest,' an Ichii-gashi tree selected as one of the top 100 great trees. With an estimated age of over 160 years, a trunk circumference of 402 cm, and a height of 38 m, it stands as a testament to nature's power. Finally, the view of Miike—a deep crater lake reaching 103 m in depth—is unforgettable. The lake perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains and Mount Takachiho, offering a serene view from the shores of Koshi Port.
The forest offers a different face in every season. From spring to summer, the air is filled with birdsong and the lush greenery of the evergreen forest, making it an excellent time to spot summer birds like the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. From autumn to winter, the landscape transforms with the changing colors of deciduous trees and the crisp, clear air that makes the view of Miike lake particularly striking. Depending on when you visit, you will encounter different bird species and botanical displays.
Hiking is the primary activity here. The well-maintained trails allow for forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) and nature observation. The total course length is approximately 12.3 km, taking about 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. Near Koshi Port, visitors can also engage in water-based activities such as boating or kayaking to experience the lake's ecosystem from a different perspective. The area is also a popular spot for fishing, allowing enthusiasts to feel close to the lakeside environment.
Oike Wild Bird Forest is part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. The surrounding landscape is characterized by volcanic topography, including Mount Takachiho, and features facilities like the Oike Campground. Staying overnight in a nearby campsite offers a deeper connection to the local environment. The region is also rich in volcanic-related landmarks and sites steeped in ancient Japanese legends.
When using the hiking trails, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. As you will be navigating natural terrain, it is highly recommended to bring gear suitable for sudden weather changes. Since the primary purpose is nature observation, please maintain a quiet demeanor to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
