Oawaranishi no Tanada is a highly distinctive rice terrace landscape located in Misaki Town, Kume District, in the northern part of Okayama Prefecture. Situated in a mountainous area at an altitude of 400m, approximately 750 terraced fields spread out in a 360-degree bowl shape, encircling the entire valley. The layered, curving lines created by this unique topography represent the 'original landscape of Japan' and have been selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan.' Visitors can witness an overwhelming scale of scenery where nature and human activity exist in perfect harmony.
Rice cultivation utilizing the natural terrain has been practiced in this region since ancient times. These terraced fields, built to follow the contours of the bowl-shaped topography, are not merely agricultural sites but vital cultural assets that symbolize the local landscape. The changing appearance of the terraces throughout the seasons serves as a testament to the preservation of traditional Japanese rural life.
