Ohirayama is the highest peak in Hofu City, standing at an elevation of 631 meters. Located at its summit, Ohirayama Summit Park is renowned as one of the premier viewpoints in the region. The location offers a vast, sweeping landscape where you can look out over the Seto Inland Sea, stretching from Shunan City in the east to Yamaguchi City and Ube City in the west. In 2004, the area was completely renovated into a multi-purpose park featuring spacious lawn areas and playground equipment, making it a perfect spot to enjoy nature and beautiful scenery simultaneously.
This area has long been cherished as an important local observation point. The summit area is home to a major regional television broadcasting station and is surrounded by a rich natural environment, including nearby ranch lands. Following its 2004 renovation, the site evolved from a simple lookout point into a versatile destination where families and tourists can relax and spend quality time in nature. It is worth noting that due to facility management and maintenance, the park and parking areas have historically undergone nighttime closures.
The greatest attraction is the breathtaking panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. From the summit, visitors can enjoy an unobstructed view of the coastal topography and the surrounding cityscape. Another iconic seasonal highlight is the 'Azalea' display. With approximately 100,000 azalea plants, the entire mountain is enveloped in vibrant, brilliant colors during the spring season. The well-maintained lawn areas and children's playgrounds further enhance the experience, providing an open and refreshing atmosphere for all ages.
The highlight of the year is May. During the 'Ohirayama Azalea Festival,' the 100,000 azaleas reach full bloom, offering the most spectacular and colorful scenery possible. Visiting in May is the best way to experience the peak beauty of nature. Please be aware that since February 2023, the park and parking lots have been closed during nighttime hours for management reasons; therefore, it is highly recommended to plan your visit during daylight hours.
The park is equipped with lawn areas and playground equipment, making it an ideal location for relaxation or a fun outing for children in a natural setting. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls while taking in the expansive views or engage in landscape photography. The environment is perfect for a peaceful way to spend time while connecting with the surrounding natural beauty.
Ohirayama is located on the border between Hofu City and Shunan City. Near the base of the mountain, the Ohirayama Tunnel serves as a vital transport link for the Sanyo Expressway and Sanyo Shinkansen. The area is also rich in culture; after enjoying the views at Ohirayama, you can easily combine your trip with a tour of the many historic temples and shrines located within Hofu City.
When visiting the summit park, comfortable walking shoes and casual, easy-to-move-in clothing are highly recommended. As the environment is heavily influenced by nature, dressing in layers to adapt to temperature changes is wise. Please plan your arrival during the daytime, as the parking lots and park facilities are closed at night. While most local transport or nearby services may require cash, please carry some Japanese Yen for convenience. To preserve the natural environment, please follow local etiquette, such as taking all trash home with you.
