Ohama Beach is a premier seaside destination located in Sumoto City, Hyogo Prefecture. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery of white sand and lush green pines, it has been officially recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as one of 'Japan's Best 100 Rapid Water Bathing Places.' The coastline is characterized by shallow, gentle waves, making it an exceptionally safe and pleasant environment for swimming and water play. The sandy shoreline stretches approximately 750 meters, offering an expansive and open landscape for visitors to enjoy.
The area has long been cherished for its rich natural beauty. The backdrop of Mount Mikuma provides a majestic mountain view, and the vista from the Sumoto Castle ruins—one of the 'Eight Views of Sumoto'—plays a significant role in the local cultural landscape. Furthermore, the proximity to the Sumome Onsen hot spring district has helped the area develop into a historic hub where natural leisure and traditional hot spring culture meet.
The beach is famous for its 'Senbonmatsu' (thousand pine trees), where dense black pines create a striking contrast against the blue sea. The presence of Mount Mikuma behind the shore adds to the natural splendor. Additionally, the area offers historical depth; from the Sumoto Castle ruins, visitors can look down upon Ohama Park and the city of Sumoto, blending history with coastal beauty. For modern convenience, the beach is well-equipped with a beach house, public showers, changing rooms, and coin lockers.
The official swimming season typically runs from mid-July to the end of August (for the 2025 season, it is scheduled from July 11 to August 31). While the beach becomes very lively during the summer months, the shallow and calm nature of the water makes it an ideal spot for families with young children. Please note that fishing is strictly prohibited during the swimming season to ensure the safety of all bathers.
Beyond swimming, visitors can enjoy various leisure activities. The beach offers boat rental services to support your maritime adventures. The area is well-developed with parking lots and a beach house, making it suitable for both day trips and extended stays at nearby accommodations. However, please be aware that camping and the use of open flames (such as barbecues) are strictly prohibited within Ohama Park.
Ohama Beach is adjacent to the Sumoto Onsen hot spring district. After a refreshing day in the ocean, visitors can rejuvenate at nearby hot spring facilities. The area also offers a rich cultural circuit, combining the natural beauty of the coast with historical explorations of sites like the Sumoto Castle ruins.
To enjoy your visit, please bring swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and sunscreen. The beach house provides essential facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and coin lockers. To maintain a pleasant environment, please follow these rules: camping and any cooking involving fire (including portable stoves/BBQs) are prohibited. It is also mandatory to take all trash and pet waste home with you. Noise-making, playing golf, or driving vehicles/motorcycles into the park are strictly forbidden.
