Lake Ogori is a breathtaking lake located in the Kohoku area of Shiga Prefecture, celebrated as one of the "Kohoku Eight Views." With a circumference of approximately 6.4 km, the lake is characterized by its incredibly calm and mirror-like water surface. This scenic spot offers a profound sense of tranquility, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the shifting beauty of nature throughout the year.
The region possesses a rich cultural tapestry with many local legends. Throughout the lakeside, you can find various monuments and stone pillars related to haiku poetry. Historically, this area has been a beloved destination for those who enjoy haikai (classical Japanese poetry) and the appreciation of nature, maintaining a deep connection between the landscape and literary arts.
The greatest allure of Lake Ogori lies in its seasonal color transformations. In spring, the Ogori River Embankment offers a spectacular view where pink cherry blossoms and bright yellow canola flowers bloom simultaneously. In early summer, the "Lake Ogori Hydrangea Garden" comes alive with approximately 10,000 blooming hydrangeas, creating a harmonious landscape with the lake. During the winter, the lake becomes a famous destination for wakasagi (pond smelt) fishing, considered one of the best spots in the Kansai region.
Recommended visiting times vary by season. Spring (March to May) is the peak season to witness the stunning combination of cherry blossoms and canola flowers. Early summer (around June) is ideal for viewing the lush hydrangeas. In winter, the area attracts many fishing enthusiasts. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly observe the vibrant colors of the flora and the peaceful reflection on the water surface.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful nature walks and seasonal activities. Winter is particularly popular for wakasagi fishing. However, please note that certain activities are strictly prohibited to protect the environment: camping, barbecues, canoeing, swimming, and SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) are not allowed. We ask that all visitors respect these rules to preserve the serene atmosphere.
The surrounding area features local restaurants serving fresh delicacies from the lake and mountains. A popular local experience is visiting eateries that serve freshly caught wakasagi as tempura. The location also offers excellent access to the nearby sightseeing areas of Nagahama and Maibara.
