Ogi Park, located in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture, is a beautiful destination where history and nature harmonize perfectly. It holds the prestigious distinction of being selected for both the 'Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan' and the 'Top 100 Historical Parks in Japan,' serving as a beloved symbol of the Ogi region. During the spring, approximately 3,000 cherry trees bloom in a spectacular display that captivates all who visit. Beyond its natural beauty, the park possesses the elegance of a historic Japanese garden, offering diverse charms throughout the seasons.
The roots of this park lie in the exquisite garden traditions passed down from Nabeshima Motoshige, the first lord of the Ogi Domain, to the second lord, Naonori. It is a high-status garden that preserves the sophisticated culture of the former castle town. For generations, this site has been carefully preserved as a symbol of the region's history and natural beauty. It is not merely a recreational space but a precious cultural heritage site where visitors can feel the profound historical atmosphere of Japan.
The absolute highlight is the cherry blossom season in spring. The sight of roughly 3,000 cherry trees is breathtaking, featuring particularly rare specimens like the 'Tsunomaki' tree, which is estimated to be 350 years old. The night-time illumination is also a must-see; the landscape transforms into a dreamlike world as traditional bonbori lanterns and approximately 5,000 bamboo lanterns light up the darkness. During the peak blossom season, the area around nearby Okayama Shrine often features food stalls, adding to the lively and festive atmosphere of 'Hanami' (flower viewing).
The best time to visit is from late March to April during the peak cherry blossom season. During this time, the daytime blossoms are stunning, but the nighttime illumination offers a romantic and mystical atmosphere that is highly popular among couples. If you visit in May, you can enjoy the beautiful blooms of azaleas and wisteria, making it worth a visit in a different season as well. For the most magical experience, we recommend visiting during the evening light-up period (roughly 18:00 to 21:00).
The park is well-equipped with facilities for sports and leisure. The adjacent 'Jarakuen Ground' is perfect for ball games such as baseball, softball, and soccer. There are also well-maintained tennis courts available for those looking to enjoy healthy outdoor activities. These facilities provide a wonderful way to refresh yourself in an open, natural environment. Please note that the park also features lighting facilities, allowing for use during the evening hours.
The area surrounding the park retains a wonderful historical atmosphere. For instance, the nearby Okayama Shrine provides a chance to experience local culture through seasonal events and food stalls during cherry blossom season. Ogi City also features various other historical streetscapes and nature-rich spots, making Ogi Park an excellent base for exploring the wider Saga region.
For walking or playing sports, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended, as some areas may be unpaved. During the cherry blossom season, the evening air can be chilly, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. Regarding etiquette, please ensure you take all your trash home with you and strictly observe the ban on open flames (fire is prohibited). Since parking can become limited during peak seasons, we recommend checking local transport options in advance.
