Ogawa Suwa Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. The crowning jewel of this site is the legendary weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura), which is designated as a natural monument by the city. With an estimated age of approximately 650 years, this massive tree creates a breathtaking landscape as its blossoms unfold each spring. The harmonious blend of the tree's immense life force and the shrine's tranquil atmosphere makes it one of the most iconic scenic spots in the Iwaki area.
The shrine has long been a center of faith and community for the local people. The Shidarezakura tree, standing as a silent witness to centuries of history, was officially designated as a natural monument in 1999. With a height of approximately 11.5 meters and a trunk circumference of about 3.6 meters, its scale is truly overwhelming. Nearby, you can visit Ganseiji Temple, which houses a National Treasure, or relax at the Iwaki Yumoto Onsen hot spring resort. The shrine also serves as a great base for exploring the coastal scenery of the Shioyasaki Lighthouse or the beautiful Natsui River Valley.
When visiting the shrine, please be mindful that this is a sacred space and dress appropriately. As the grounds contain gravel paths and some steps, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
