Oga Sea Aquarium GAO is situated along the scenic coastline of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Leveraging its prime location facing the Sea of Japan, the aquarium showcases a wide variety of marine life, including fish native to the waters near Akita and polar bears. It serves as a community-rooted facility where visitors can deeply connect with the ecology of the ocean.
The facility has a rich history, having previously operated as the Akita Prefectural Oga Aquarium. The original facility, established in 1967, achieved a significant milestone in 1972 by being the first in Japan to successfully breed a Caiman (Pale American Caiman). Following a period of closure for a major renovation, the facility reopened in July 2004 under its current name, "Oga Sea Aquarium GAO." Today, it is managed and operated by Oga Aquarium Co., Ltd. under a designated administrator system.
The exhibition floor is organized into several distinct areas. Key attractions include the polar bear exhibit, penguin displays, and various exhibits featuring creatures related to the waters of Akita Prefecture. The facility is equipped with a diverse range of tanks specifically designed to showcase the unique characteristics of each species.
Standard operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). Please note that hours may be shortened due to seasonal events, special exhibitions, or private bookings. For instance, on certain Saturdays, the facility may close as early as 2:30 PM. We highly recommend checking the official website before your visit. Additionally, please be aware that certain exhibits, such as the polar bear display, may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance or seasonal changes in the animal's environment.
Visitors can gain profound knowledge about marine ecosystems through the various displays. The facility also features a museum shop and a restaurant, providing a comfortable environment for a full-day experience at the aquarium.
The Oga Peninsula area is dotted with various attractions, including Oga Onsen (hot spring resorts) and sites where you can experience local culture. The aquarium serves as an excellent starting point for a sightseeing route around the peninsula.
The aquarium accepts payments for admission, the museum shop, and the restaurant. In addition to cash, various credit cards (single payment only) and electronic money (QUICPay, nanaco, WAON, iD, Transport IC cards, and Rakuten Edy) are accepted. Please note that you cannot top up/charge electronic money at the facility, nor can you pay for a balance deficit with electronic money.
English language versions of the facility's guide maps are available, along with Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean.
Personal photography for social media or blogs using smartphones is generally permitted. However, you must turn off the flash in areas where flash photography is prohibited. The use of tripods, monopods, or stools for photography is strictly prohibited, as is live streaming. To ensure the safety of the animals and a pleasant environment for all, please refrain from tapping on the glass or making loud noises.
No advanced reservation is required for general admission. However, please check the official website before visiting, as operating hours may change due to private events or facility bookings.
