The Ofuna Site is a large-scale settlement from the late early to middle Jomon period, situated on a coastal terrace at an elevation of 30–50 meters along the Ofuna River in the Minamikabuto district of Hakodate, Hokkaido. This site serves as a key settlement-hub from the period of sedentary development approximately 5,000 to 4,000 years ago. Notable features include over 100 pit-dwelling remains, massive earthwork structures, and more than 100 burial pits. The discovery of diverse artifacts—including marine mammals, fish, and various nuts—provides a profound look into the diet and spiritual life of the ancient inhabitants. The opening hours for the Ofuna Site and the Hakodate Jomon Culture Exchange Center vary by season. From April to October, the facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From November to March, the hours are 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. You can observe the historical remains regardless of the season. When exploring the outdoor archaeological area, please prepare appropriate clothing for the weather. During the winter months, heavy clothing and protection against the cold are essential. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to clearly observe the topography and the structural details of the pit dwellings.
