Odashirogahara is a vast grassland area spanning approximately 3 kilometers within Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture. Located on the west side of the Yugawa River, which flows from Yunoko Lake, its area is about one-fourth the size of the nearby Senjogahara. Surrounded by dense Mizunara oak forests, the area maintains a rich, pristine ecosystem that offers a different face to visitors every season. The most iconic sight is a single white birch tree standing in the center of the grassland, a legendary symbol that attracts photographers from all over.
As part of the protected Nikko National Park, Odashirogahara is strictly managed to preserve its natural state. While vehicle access was once more common, current policies restrict private cars to protect the environment. Today, the area serves as a model for sustainable tourism, where visitors access the site primarily via low-emission buses and well-maintained boardwalks to minimize the human footprint on the delicate ecosystem.
The greatest draw of this area is the seasonal transformation of its plant life. From early summer to summer, you can witness the vibrant blooms of Umanoashigata (June–July), Hozakisimotoke (July–August), and Nikko Azami (July–August). In autumn, the landscape shifts to a deep palette of golden Mizunara oak leaves and colorful autumn grasses. Walking along the carefully maintained Odashirogahara Circuit boardwalk allows you to observe the unique high-altitude wetland vegetation up close.
To truly experience Odashirogahara, we recommend timing your visit with the blooming seasons. Visiting between June and August is ideal to witness the peak of summer's natural vitality. Alternatively, autumn offers a stunning display of golden foliage. Please note that the bus service typically operates from late April to November, so please plan your trip accordingly.
The primary activity here is nature walking. You can observe the high-altitude wetland ecosystem while walking along paths maintained by the Ministry of the Environment. There are also observation decks that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the vast grasslands and the surrounding mountains. It is a perfect place to disconnect from daily life and relax to the sounds of nature and the wind. However, to protect the environment, please stay strictly on the designated paths.
Located in the Okunikko area, Odashirogahara is surrounded by many natural wonders. Nearby attractions include the Senjogahara Marshland, Yunoko Lake, and the famous Ryuzu Falls. The area also features several hot spring (onsen) facilities, allowing you to relax in warm waters after your nature walk. Most visitors access the area via nearby hubs such as Akanuma, Nishinoko, or Senjugahama.
Since you will be walking in a natural environment, please wear comfortable clothing and prepare for sudden weather changes. Even though the paths are maintained, sturdy walking shoes are essential for the natural terrain. Cash is required for bus fares, so please carry Japanese Yen. As this is a protected National Park, please strictly follow the rules: do not pick plants, do not litter (take all trash home), and stay on the designated trails. Please note that English-language signage and assistance may be limited, so we recommend checking your route and map in advance.
