Obako is a breathtaking scenic area located in the Sounkyo region of Kamikawa, Hokkaido. Situated approximately 6 km from Sounkyo Onsen toward Kitami, this spectacular landscape reveals itself immediately after passing through the Shin-Obako Tunnel. The name "Obako" refers to a topography where the steep riverbanks create a shape resembling a box (hako). The sight of massive, vertical rock walls standing like a giant folding screen is a powerful testament to the strength of nature.
The landscape was shaped by the lava from a volcanic eruption at Mt. Daisetsu (Ohachidaira) approximately 30,000 years ago. As the hot lava cooled slowly over many years, the rock layers of the Ishikari River formed the unique, geometric patterns known as "columnar jointing." This site holds a deep geological history, where the massive energy of volcanic activity sculpted the very foundation of the scenery you see today.
The primary highlight is the magnificent vertical cliffs showcasing regular columnar jointing. The sight of the white, gray, or brownish rock faces rising sharply toward the sky is truly overwhelming. The contrast between the textured rock walls, the lush surrounding forests, and the river flowing below creates a stunning natural masterpiece.
