Nyuto Onsenkyo is a premier hot spring destination situated at the base of Mt. Nyuto in Akita Prefecture. The area is composed of seven distinct hot spring inns: Tsurunoyu, Myonoyu, Kaniiba, Ogama, Magome, Kuroyu, and Kyukamura. With a history dating back to the Edo period, this area has long been revered as a 'toji' (hot spring healing) destination. Each of the seven inns offers a unique mineral composition and atmosphere, all set within a breathtaking landscape of lush beech forests.
The region is deeply connected to the history of the Akita clan, with its hot spring traditions stretching back to the Edo period. Historically, people gathered here to seek the medicinal benefits of the waters through 'toji'—the practice of long-term hot spring stays for health and recovery. The cultural heritage is preserved in the architecture and the traditional ways of life passed down through generations. For instance, at Tsurunoyu, you can still see the striking scenery of traditional thatched-roof buildings that evoke the atmosphere of old Japan.
Each of the seven inns in Nyuto Onsenkyo offers a different way to experience the waters. Whether it is the unique mineral qualities of the springs or the stunning natural vistas, there is something for every traveler. The outdoor baths (rotenburo) are particularly famous for being nestled directly into the natural environment, often featuring traditional architectural styles. For those staying overnight, the "Yumeguri-cho" (Hot Spring Tour Pass) allows for a deeply cultural experience, enabling you to visit multiple facilities and enjoy the diverse thermal waters.
Nyuto Onsenkyo reveals a different face with every season. In winter, the area is transformed into a magical white wonderland, where you can soak in hot springs while surrounded by snow-covered beech forests—a quintessential Japanese winter experience. In spring, summer, and autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves and the lush greenery of the beech forest provide a stunning backdrop for your soak. Please note that the operating hours for day-trip bathing (higaeri) vary by facility and season, so it is highly recommended to check with each inn in advance.
The most popular way to enjoy the area is through "Yumeguri" (hot spring hopping). By using the "Yumeguri-cho" pass, which is available to overnight guests, you can visit the seven member facilities. This allows you to experience the different water qualities and the unique natural settings of each location. Capturing the scenery through photography is also a popular activity, as the steam rising from the baths against the backdrop of the mountains creates a truly iconic landscape.
