Isuzu-shonendo is a captivating limestone cave located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. The cave was formed by the Kisasa River flowing into the underground, creating a stunning natural labyrinth. There are three distinct paths available: Course A, B, and C. Each course offers a different level of intensity, varying in distance, water depth, and the level of equipment required. The experience changes significantly depending on which course you choose, especially regarding lighting and water temperature.

History & Geological Background

First discovered on August 25, 1927, this cave was formerly known as Takine Fudo Cave. The region is part of the 'Sendai-hei' karst topography, characterized by limestone erosion and weathering. It is a vital part of the 'Abukuma Cave System,' shaped by the water flow originating from the southern slopes of Mt. Otaki.

Main Highlights

The cave features a single-path structure that branches into different courses based on distance. Course A covers approximately 150m, Course B covers about 600m, and Course C extends to 900m. As you progress beyond Course B, lighting becomes scarce and the water temperature drops to around 10°C (50°F), making proper preparation essential. In some sections, the water depth can reach above the knees of an adult.

Seasonal & Time-Based Recommendations

Isuzu-shonendo is highly sensitive to weather conditions. Following heavy rainfall, water levels inside the cave may rise, which can lead to temporary closures for safety. Depending on the season, even Course A may experience higher water levels. It is highly recommended to visit during periods of stable weather.

Activities & Experiences

Each course offers a different level of exploration. While Course A can be enjoyed in standard clothing, Courses B and C require preparation for getting wet. For the more adventurous B and C courses, it is recommended to bring a headlamp, waterproof handheld light, a change of clothes, and waterproof footwear. Please note that Course C is generally by reservation only and requires a professional guide to accompany you.

The area around Isuzu-shonendo features several other natural attractions, such as Abukuma Cave and the Hoshi no Mura Observatory, all of which are part of the same geological water source system.

What to Bring, Clothing & Etiquette

Please prepare according to the cave environment:

• *Payment**: Cash is the primary method of payment. Consider purchasing rental items at the service desk.
• *Language Support**: While there are information signs, detailed English support from staff may be limited.
• *Reservations**: Course A and B do not require a reservation, but Course C is generally reservation-only.
• *Clothing**: Course A is suitable for regular clothes. For B and C, we recommend bringing a change of clothes, T-shirts, shorts, and sandals or water-resistant shoes. Avoid wearing rubber boots (long boots) as they become heavy when filled with water.
• *Photography**: Please follow local instructions regarding photography inside the cave.
• *Equipment**: For Course B and beyond, a headlamp or waterproof handheld light is necessary. These can be purchased or rented on-site.
• *Accessibility**: Due to water currents and uneven terrain, the cave is not suitable for wheelchair users.
