Located in Numazu Port, the Large Observation Water Gate 'Byuo' serves a dual purpose: a functional sea gate to prevent tsunami damage and a scenic observation facility for visitors. From the observation corridor situated approximately 30 meters above ground, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The facility features various exhibits related to the sea and visually engaging areas designed to captivate visitors.
This facility was constructed with the critical function of protecting the area from tsunamis caused by earthquakes. It is equipped with a system that automatically closes the water gate if a seismograph detects specific thresholds. The name 'Byuo' is a creative combination of the English word 'view' and the Japanese word 'uo' (meaning fish), reflecting its identity. Inside, visitors can learn about the history of Numazu Port and the development of the local fishing industry through detailed exhibits.

The facility offers several unique exhibition areas. One of the most popular is the floor area covered with graphic sheets that create the sensation of looking directly into the deep sea from above. Other areas feature deep-sea fish themes on the walls and inside the elevators. Additionally, there are zones with panels explaining the history of Numazu and the mechanics of the water gate, including footage of the gate opening and closing. You can also find maps and counter tables that introduce the local culture and scenery.
During the day, you can enjoy the bright, clear views of the ocean and the surrounding coastline. At night, the facility features a lighting system for the floor, offering a completely different atmosphere than the daytime. Please note that operating hours may be shortened or the facility may close temporarily due to weather conditions or emergency alerts.
In the observation corridor, you can relax while gazing at the vast landscape. The trick art area provides a perfect spot for fun photography using clever wall designs. Throughout the facility, you can engage with the history and culture of Numazu through various panels. There are also counter tables available where you can take a break while enjoying the view.
The area around Numazu Port is a vibrant hub for seafood and local food culture. Visitors can enjoy exploring the nearby streets to experience the local maritime atmosphere and history.
