Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium, located at Numazu Port in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a unique facility specializing in the study and display of deep-sea organisms. It is famous for its exhibits of the Coelacanth, the world-renowned 'living fossil.' The aquarium's central theme is the mysterious ecosystem of Suruga Bay, inviting visitors to explore a world that remains largely inaccessible to humans through engaging displays and interactive attractions.
The facility was established to research and showcase the deep-sea resources and biological diversity of Surga Bay. While it originally had a strong focus as a 'Coelacanth Museum,' it has evolved into a comprehensive aquarium that introduces the broader charms of the deep sea to a wide audience. It serves as a vital cultural hub for Numazu Port, working alongside the nearby 'Port 83' area to support the region's tourism and culinary heritage.
The centerpiece of the aquarium is the Coelacanth exhibit. Here, you can observe two frozen specimens and three taxidermy models up close, allowing you to witness their unique prehistoric forms. The collection includes over 100 species, ranging from creatures collected from the depths of Suruga Bay to various deep-sea life from around the world. The museum utilizes sophisticated lighting and visual effects to create an immersive atmosphere, making it easy to understand the biology and environment of the deep ocean.
The aquarium is enjoyable year-round, but certain exhibits, such as the display of deep-sea creatures like the Meniko (sea pig), may change depending on fishing seasons (for example, around mid-October). Visiting during these transition periods may offer a chance to see new species. Additionally, during the late afternoon, the lighting in the exhibition areas is designed to mimic the deep sea more realistically, creating a truly mystical and enchanting atmosphere.
Beyond traditional viewing, the aquarium offers high-tech interactive content. The 'VR Deep Sea Adventure: Deep Cruise' allows you to experience a journey in a submersible exploring underwater ruins in a virtual Suruga Bay. There is also the 'Deep Sea World' ride-on shooting attraction, where you can use a laser gun to explore the deep-sea environment. Please note that these attractions may require an additional fee, though discounts are often available with certain ticket types.
Located right next to the aquarium is the 'Port 83' complex, a multi-purpose tourism facility. This area features various dining options, including Italian restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and seafood specialty shops. After your visit, you can enjoy the fresh catch of the day at Numazu Port, making it a perfect destination for food lovers and travelers.
Since many exhibition areas are kept dark to mimic the deep sea, comfortable clothing is recommended. For payments, the facility accepts cash, credit cards, and major transportation IC cards. Some attractions may require separate fees. While photography is generally permitted, please refrain from touching the exhibits or the living creatures. The facility is designed with accessibility in mind and is wheelchair-friendly.
