The Numata Youtaka Andon Matsuri is a traditional festival held in Numata Town, within the Sorachi subprefecture of Hokkaido. It is celebrated as one of the three major Andon festivals in Hokkaido and is famous for being the only 'Kenka Andon' (fighting lantern) festival in the region. The most spectacular feature is the sight of massive lanterns—standing 7m tall, 12m long, and weighing up to 5 tons—navigating the streets and forcefully colliding with one another. The combination of the glowing, ethereal lanterns and the energetic shouts of the participants creates an atmosphere of intense heat and excitement.
The roots of this festival lie in the 'Youtaka Matsuri' of Oyabe City (formerly Tsutsumizu Town) in Toyama Prefecture. In 1977, settlers who had migrated from Toyama to Numata Town established this festival to preserve their ancestral traditions and to share the spirit of community during the challenges of pioneering the land. This event, which blends Toyama's traditions with the pioneering spirit of Hokkaido, serves as a vital cultural pillar that fosters local solidarity and regional pride.
The highlight of the festival is the 'collision' of the giant lanterns. Watching these 5-ton structures clash is a powerful, overwhelming experience for any spectator. Additionally, the procession of beautifully illuminated lanterns through the dark streets, accompanied by traditional music (hayashi) and spirited chants, forms a core part of the spectacle. It is a unique, dynamic combination of light, sound, and physical impact that you won't find anywhere else.
The festival is typically held over two days: the last Friday and Saturday of August. As it takes place in late summer, the contrast between the dark night sky and the glowing lanterns is particularly striking. Since the event takes place outdoors at night, it is important to prepare for the evening temperature.
Visitors can experience the raw power of the colliding lanterns from close range. You can also enjoy local flavors at the 'Furusato Ichiba' (Hometown Market), where various food stalls offer local Numata specialties and gourmet treats. Immersing yourself in the festival allows you to feel the deep sense of community and unity that defines the local culture.
Numata Town is a beautiful area known as the 'Land of Fireflies,' offering rich natural scenery. Before or after the festival, consider visiting nearby hot spring facilities such as 'Sunflower Park Kitaryu Onsen' or exploring the local nature trails. The main event takes place around the urban area near JR Ishikari-Numata Station, making it easily accessible from the station area.
