Nuinoike is a stunning spring-fed pond located in the Kawazu district of Shiroishi Town, Saga Prefecture. This site holds a dramatic history; after being depleted for over 40 years due to excessive groundwater pumping, the spring miraculously revived in 2001. Today, it produces incredibly pure water known as 'Kinmyosui' (Golden Exquisite Water), and is officially recognized as one of the 'Saga Heritagees to be Preserved for the 22nd Century.' The pond covers approximately 0.6 hectares and is surrounded by a rich, thriving ecosystem.
Nuinoike is said to have over 800 years of history. Historically, this area was blessed with numerous springs used for agriculture and daily life. However, due to the drilling of deep wells for drought countermeasures in the late 1950s, the pond completely dried up in 1958. The turning point came in 2001 when a change in local water management allowed water to once again bubble up around the Itsukushima Shrine, restoring the pond to its former glory. The shrine at the center of the pond is dedicated to the deity Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto and has long been a center of local faith. Local legends also link the name to Nunotono no Sukeyuji, a relative of the historical lord of Suko Castle.
The greatest attraction is the revived 'Kinmyosui' water. Visitors can see the clear water flowing through collection points set up by local residents. The Itsukushima Shrine, positioned in the center of the pond, creates a deeply sacred and mystical atmosphere. The surrounding landscape, featuring tall cedar trees and seasonal foliage, creates beautiful reflections on the water's surface. This fusion of natural vitality and spiritual history offers a truly unique viewing experience.
Nuinoike reveals a different face with every season. The reflections on the water are particularly breathtaking when the surrounding trees turn vibrant colors in autumn or when the summer greenery is at its deepest. During the summer, the area sometimes hosts events like the 'Summer Festival Candle Night,' where countless lights float on the water, creating a dreamlike, ethereal scene. For the best experience, visit during the day to see the water's transparency, or at dusk to witness the beautiful silhouettes of the surrounding forest.
The local community is deeply involved in preserving this site. Visitors can learn about the coexistence of humans and nature through local environmental monitoring activities. The area also hosts cultural events such as fishing competitions and traditional 'Koto and Dance' gatherings, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.
