Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is one of Japan's most prestigious ski resorts, located in Nozawa Onsen Village, Nagano Prefecture. The resort boasts 44 diverse courses, with approximately 40% of the terrain dedicated to beginner-friendly slopes. With a maximum vertical drop of about 1,085m and runs extending up to 10km, it offers a massive scale for all skill levels. The resort is famous for its exceptional powder snow, making it a top destination for skiing and snowboarding. Beyond the slopes, visitors can enjoy unique winter experiences such as snowshoeing and soaking in traditional hot springs.
The history of skiing in Nozawa Onsen dates back to 1912. The area has a rich sporting heritage, including the installation of a jump ramp in the Hikage area in 1925. By 1950, the resort had already established itself with early lift installations, making it a pioneer in Japanese private ski resorts. Originally managed by the village, the resort has been operated by Nozawa Onsen Co., Ltd. since 2005 under a designated administrator system. This long history has allowed the area to develop into a unique destination where traditional hot spring (onsen) culture and modern winter sports seamlessly blend.
The ski area is divided into several zones to accommodate different skill levels. The dynamic terrain, utilizing significant elevation changes, is a major draw for advanced skiers. In addition to traditional skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers exciting winter activities like snowshoeing through the serene snowy landscapes and the thrilling 'Zip Sky Ride,' where you can glide through the air on a wire. When the snow melts, the Uenohira area transforms into a beautiful natural park featuring over 800 species of alpine plants, making it a great destination for summer hiking and nature walks.
The peak season is from late November to early May. The high season is particularly popular among enthusiasts seeking the highest quality powder snow. In the spring (late March to early May), you can enjoy skiing amidst the beautiful melting snow scenery. During the summer, the area is perfect for walking among alpine flowers and enjoying lunch in the fresh mountain air. For winter operations, the Nagasaka Gondola typically runs from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
There is much more to do than just skiing. The Zip Sky Ride offers a high-adrenaline experience where you wear a harness and glide down a wire. For a more tranquil experience, snowshoeing allows you to wander through the white, silent forest, feeling the true essence of the mountains. These activities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their skiing or snowboarding ability, providing a way to connect with nature.
Surrounding the ski resort is a charming, historic hot spring town. A classic way to end your day is to relax in a local onsen after a day on the slopes. The resort also features various rest houses and dining facilities within the ski areas. In the warmer months, the Uenohira area becomes a lush green space perfect for enjoying nature and greenery.
When visiting in winter, heavy thermal clothing and high-quality winter gear are essential. Please ensure you have appropriate footwear for skiing or snowboarding. Note that a deposit may be required for IC cards used for lift passes. Always follow the posted safety rules and guidelines on the mountain. If traveling by car, ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires (studless tires) and be prepared for snowy road conditions.
