Notojima is a captivating island situated in Naoe Bay within Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. In June 2011, the island's cultural landscape, centered around its traditional agriculture and fishing, was officially recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. The island is easily accessible by vehicle via two iconic structures: the 1,050-meter-long Notojima Bridge and the 620-meter-long Twin Bridge (Naka Noto Agricultural Road Bridge). Once you arrive, you will find a variety of recreational facilities, including the Notojima Aquarium, the Ishikawa Prefectural Notojima Glass Art Museum, hot spring facilities, golf courses, and campsites, making it an ideal destination for diverse travelers.
Notojima has a long history deeply intertwined with the sea. The opening of the Notojima Bridge in 1982 strengthened the connection between the island and the nearby Wakura Onsen hot spring district, while the completion of the Twin Bridge in 1999 further improved land access. Following a merger in 2004, the island became part of Nanao City. The local agricultural and fishing practices are not just livelihoods but are valued as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System, shaping the traditional landscape of the region. A highlight of the local calendar is the 'Notojima Mukoda Fire Festival,' one of the most famous traditional festivals in the Noto region, held annually on the last Saturday of July.
