In the massive 90-ton circulation tank, you can witness the powerful movements of species like the Sakhalin taimen—known as the 'phantom fish' of Hokkaido—alongside sablefish, flounder, Atka mackerel, and Wolffish. The aquarium also offers engaging programs such as seal feedings and penguin displays, making it a captivating destination for both adults and children. Located next to the Wakkanai City Youth Science Museum, the two facilities are affectionately known together as 'Wakkariumu,' serving as a hub for local education and tourism.
The history of the Nosappu Kanship Aquarium dates back to July 1968. It was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido's development, the 90th anniversary of Wakkanai's founding, and the 20th anniversary of its city status. Situated in the iconic Nosappu Cape, the facility plays a vital role in deepening the community's understanding of its natural environment.
Since its inception, the aquarium has served as a 'window' to the rich northern ecosystem, passing the knowledge of the sea's bounty to future generations.
