Norikura Kogen is a vast highland area spanning altitudes from 1,100m to 1,800m, located on the southeastern side of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps). Formed by lava flows from Mount Norikura, this area attracts visitors year-round: as a cool summer retreat, a base for autumn mountaineering, and a premier destination for winter skiing. Its greatest charms are the abundant natural spring water, rejuvenating hot springs, and a rich ecosystem of diverse flora and fauna.
The region has long maintained a way of life in harmony with nature. In these high-altitude areas, traditional agriculture such as buckwheat (soba) cultivation has preserved the local food culture. The area also has a unique connection to extreme environments; it has been used for training by Antarctic research expeditions due to its harsh, high-altitude conditions. Today, the community focuses on developing tourism while strictly preserving the natural environment.
Norikura Kogen offers a diverse array of natural landscapes. From spring to early summer, the most iconic sight is the "Snow Wall," where snow banks reach heights exceeding 9 meters (taller than a bus). Other must-see spots include the Sanbon-taki Falls (selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls), the serene Ushiroike Pond, and the lush Ichinose Grassland. On the hiking trails, you will find forests of white birch and larch trees, and if you are lucky, you might spot the Japanese Serow, a specially designated natural monument.
The charm of Norikura Kogen lies in its changing seasonal expressions. From late May to June, you can experience the spectacular "Snow Wall" via specialized bus tours. In July and August, it is a perfect destination for those seeking cool temperatures for hiking and cycling. In autumn, a stroll around the Suzuran Bridge is highly recommended to enjoy the vibrant foliage. In winter, the area transforms into a hub for high-altitude skiing and snowboarding activities.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Norikura Kogen is a premier playground. You can enjoy serious mountaineering, hiking, cycling, and skiing. The area is also deeply rooted in hot spring culture; the Norikura Onsen villages (including Norikura Kogen Onsen, Suzuran Onsen, and Azumi Nobo Onsen) allow you to soak in natural waters surrounded by mountain scenery. Additionally, the area promotes a new style of wellness-focused stays called "Hoji," designed to harmonize the mind and body through nature.
Located at the eastern foot of Mount Norikura, the highland is part of the beautiful Chubu Sangaku National Park. It is easily accessible from Matsumoto city via car or bus and is located near other famous hot spring areas like Shirakane Onsen. Many accommodations, such as Kyukamura Norikura Kogen, are situated at high altitudes, making them convenient bases for hikers and tourists.
When visiting Norikura Kogen, especially at higher elevations, please be aware of drastic temperature changes. The temperature at bus stops near 2,600m can be 10°C lower than in Matsumoto city. Always bring heavy warm clothing. For hikers, crampons or snow spikes are essential depending on snow conditions. If using the Spring Mountain Bus, you must complete and submit a mountain entry plan in advance.
