Nojimazaki Lighthouse is located in Shirahama-cho, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. Situated within the Minamiboso Quasi-National Park, the lighthouse offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can climb the lighthouse to enjoy the observation deck, which provides an unobstructed view of the surrounding seascape. At the base of the lighthouse, you can also visit the 'Kirarin-kan' museum to deepen your understanding of the area.
This lighthouse is one of Japan's early Western-style lighthouses, originally designed in 1869 (Meiji 2). Its construction was part of a strategic plan following treaties signed in 1866. Although the original structure was damaged during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, the current concrete structure stands as a testament to maritime resilience. The adjacent 'Kirarin-kan' museum houses various historical documents and artifacts that explain the lighthouse's vital role in Japanese maritime history.
The primary attractions include the lighthouse observation deck, the 'Kirarin-kan' museum, and the 'Southernmost Point of the Boso Peninsula' monument located at the tip of the cape. A well-maintained walking path surrounds the lighthouse, allowing visitors to stroll along the coast while enjoying the sea breeze. On clear days, you may even see large vessels entering Tokyo Bay in the distance.
While the lighthouse is accessible year-round, the scenery changes beautifully depending on the time of day. It is particularly famous as a prime location for viewing sunsets and the first sunrise of the year. During these times, the silhouette of the lighthouse against the changing sky creates a spectacular sight. Additionally, every year on November 1st (Lighthouse Anniversary), the lighthouse often offers free admission to celebrate the occasion.
Visitors can enjoy a guided-style experience by exploring the interior of the lighthouse and browsing the historical exhibits at the museum. The surrounding coastal paths are perfect for a relaxing walk with a backdrop of the vast ocean. Exploring the natural environment of the cape and visiting the monument at the southernmost tip are highly recommended activities.
Near the lighthouse, you will find several local amenities including the Michi-no-Eki Shirahama Nojimazaki (roadside station), Shirahama Onsen (hot springs), and Shirahama Beach. Cultural enthusiasts may also visit the nearby Shirahama Marine Museum.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the coastal paths and the cape. Please note that separate admission fees may be required to enter the lighthouse interior or the museum. As many local facilities primarily accept cash, it is best to carry Japanese Yen with you. While English signage may be available, please check local availability on-site.
