Nogeyama Zoo is a municipal zoo located within Nogeyama Park in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The zoo houses over 1,000 animals across more than 100 species, including popular animals such as reticulated giraffes, chimpanzees, red pandas, and Humboldt penguins. Despite being located in the urban center, it provides an excellent environment for observing a wide variety of wildlife. A standout feature is the specialized reptile house, which maintains a constant temperature to care for and display crocodiles and various land tortoises. Since admission is free, it is an incredibly accessible destination for families and travelers on any budget.
The zoo originally opened in 1951 as "Nogeyama Amusement Park." In 1964, the amusement park functions were closed, and it transitioned into the current Nogeyama Zoo. One of the most unique cultural aspects of the zoo is the presence of the "Noge Suspension Bridge," a pedestrian bridge designed by the renowned industrial designer Sori Yanagi. His aesthetic influence can also be seen in various signs and markers throughout the grounds, offering a touch of mid-century modern design history. The zoo has been a beloved landmark for local residents and tourists for decades, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2021.
The zoo features several distinct exhibition areas. In addition to the giraffes, red pandas, and penguins, there is a dedicated reptile house. A notable site is the "Polar Bear House," which formerly housed polar bears. Today, the space has been repurposed; it now features a life-sized model of a bear and allows visitors to observe the interior of the enclosure, serving as a historical record of the former habitat and providing a unique perspective on animal care evolution.
You can observe animal activity throughout the seasons. The most pleasant times to visit are from March to May and October to November, when the weather is mild and animals tend to be more active. The zoo is open from 09:30 to 16:30, with the last entry at 16:00. Daytime is the best time to see animals moving actively. Please note that the zoo is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday).
Nogeyama Zoo is situated within Nogeyama Park, making it easy to enjoy a stroll through the park alongside your zoo visit. For those looking to expand their trip, the nearby Miki-ga-hara Chibikko Zoo in Asahi-ku is another option. Yokohama also boasts larger-scale facilities like Zoorasia, allowing you to create a comprehensive wildlife-themed sightseeing route through the Yokohama area.
Because the zoo features slopes and walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While admission to the zoo is free, you may need cash or a card for parking fees or other onsite facilities. While some English signage is available, please be mindful of basic etiquette to protect the animals' environment. The zoo is also equipped with accessible entrances and parking for wheelchairs.
