Noboribetsu Jigokudani is the iconic landmark of Noboribetsu Onsen in Hokkaido. The sight of hot steam erupting from cracks in the ground, accompanied by the distinct scent of sulfur, evokes the imagery of a true "Hell." The landscape is defined by rugged volcanic rock formations and mineral-rich terrain featuring yellow and red oxidation. This location offers a powerful visual impact, allowing visitors to feel the direct energy of the earth.
This region has been renowned for its hot spring resources since ancient times, and the landscape of Jigokudani preserves the raw wonders of nature. The volcanic activity that formed this terrain also served as the foundation for the development of the surrounding hot spring towns. Furthermore, the area is connected to cultural events such as the "Jigokudani Oni Hanabi" (Hell Valley Ogre Fireworks) held at night, blending the natural spectacle with local traditions.
The greatest highlight is the view from the Jigokudani Observatory. From this vantage point, you can observe the white steam billowing from various vents and the colorful, mineral-stained rock faces all at once. Another significant attraction is the "Jigokudani Oni Hanabi" held during specific seasons. On certain days in June, July, and September, you can enjoy a 15-minute fireworks display starting at 20:00, creating a magical atmosphere against the night landscape.
Daytime is ideal for observing the natural topography and the power of the steam vents closely. The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season. For a unique experience, we highly recommend the "Oni Hanabi" held on specific Mondays and Thursdays in June, July, and September. Since these events start at 20:00, they can be easily integrated into your post-dinner stroll. Please note that events may be canceled due to weather conditions.
The primary activity here is observing the natural landscape. You can enjoy a walk while feeling the pulse of the Earth through the views from the observatory. During specific periods, you can also experience the spectacular night-time fireworks. The nearby Noboribetsu Onsen town allows you to combine this sightseeing with a relaxing soak in the hot springs.
The area around Jigokudani is home to many popular tourist facilities and hot spring resorts. Nearby attractions include Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura (Historical Village), Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, and the Kalurusu Onsen and Kitayuzawa Onsen areas. These are essential parts of the Noboribetsu tourism circuit, making for a perfect travel route alongside your visit to Jigokudani.
For your walk, please wear comfortable walking shoes, as the paths can be damp or uneven. Be aware that the scent of sulfur is quite strong, which may be overwhelming for some. Regarding payment, cash may be required for certain services such as parking fees. If you are attending the Oni Hanabi event, it is recommended to arrive in time for the 20:00 start. The expected capacity for the event is approximately 1,000 people.
