Noboribetsu Bear Park is a unique facility located in the lush natural environment of Hokkaido, where you can observe wildlife, primarily brown bears. The journey itself is a highlight, as you take a ropeway up to the summit near Mt. Shirogane (Kuma-yama) at an altitude of 550 meters. The park serves an educational role, helping visitors deepen their understanding of the animals that inhabit Hokkaido's natural ecosystem.
The facility's history dates back to the opening of the ropeway in 1957, followed by the official opening of the park in 1958 with a mission to protect, observe, and research the wildlife of Hokkaido. Beyond wildlife, the park also serves as a cultural touchpoint; there are areas where you can learn about the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, through various exhibits and historical materials.
The park features several distinct exhibition areas. You can observe the different behaviors and lifestyles of bears in the First Pasture (males), Second Pasture (females), and the Cub Pasture. Additionally, you can spot smaller animals like Ezo squirrels. Other notable spots include observation decks for enjoying the panoramic scenery and the "Yukara Village," where you can immerse yourself in Ainu culture and folklore.
Please note that operating hours vary by season. For example, during the summer (July–September), the park is typically open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while in winter (February–March), it operates from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Be aware that the ropeway may suspend service due to weather conditions such as strong winds or lightning, which could prevent entry. It is highly recommended to check the weather forecast on the day of your visit.
Beyond standard observation, you can enjoy unique displays like the "Bear Athletics," where you watch bears move naturally through their environment. Another charming sight is the "Yo-Idon! Duck Race," which showcases the lively movements of animals. These exhibits provide a wonderful way to observe natural animal behaviors in a captivating way.
The park is situated within the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, an area renowned for its rich biodiversity, including diverse bird species and flora. It is located relatively close to the Noboribetsu Onsen hot spring town, making it easy to combine a visit to the bears with a relaxing soak in the hot springs.
Since the summit area is subject to rapid weather changes, we recommend wearing clothing suitable for temperature fluctuations.
