Nobeoka Castle Ruins is a historic site located in Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It was once known as Agata-jo or Kamei Castle. Today, the area is developed as Shiroyama Park, allowing visitors to feel the presence of history amidst beautiful surrounding nature. The site's historical significance is recognized by its selection as one of the '100 Famous Japanese Castles.'
Nobeoka Castle is a flatland mountain castle (hirayamajiro) built by Mototane Takahashi during the Edo period. The area had been ruled by the Tomochi clan since ancient times, and the castle was constructed by renovating and expanding upon the existing fortifications of the Tomochi clan. Originally called Agata-jo, it was later renamed Nobeoka Castle. The castle served as the administrative center for the Agata Domain and later the Nobeoka Domain, acting as a vital strategic stronghold for the region.
One of the most striking features of Nobeoka Castle is its stone walls. Among them is the legendary 'Sennin-goshi' (The Thousand-Man Killer). This wall, approximately 19 meters high and 70 meters long, carries a legend that if a single stone were removed, the entire structure would collapse, instantly killing a thousand enemy soldiers. Another highlight is the 'Kane-tsuki-do' (Bell Hall) located at the site of the former castle tower. Even today, the bell rings six times a day to signal the time to local residents, a tradition once immortalized in the poetry of the famous poet Baisui Wakayama.
Shiroyama Park (Nobeoka Castle Ruins) offers different beautiful-scapes depending on the season. The scenery is particularly stunning during spring (around April) and autumn (October and November), making it an ideal time for walking tours. To fully appreciate the intricate structure of the historical stone walls, it is best to visit during the bright daylight hours.
Visitors can observe the sophisticated masonry techniques of the past up close. The stone walls primarily utilize granite, sandstone, and Aso volcanic rock, some of which still bear various markings. These markings serve as precious historical evidence of the construction techniques and material distribution of the era. Listening to the resonant bell from the castle tower site is a unique experience that allows you to feel the breath of history.
The area surrounding the castle retains the atmosphere of the former castle town. The historical town layout, established through the urban planning of Mototane Takahashi, forms the basis of the modern-day Nobeoka City. Walking through the surrounding streets allows you to trace the footsteps of ancient urban planning and daily life.
