Nishikawa Niikura Rindo is a beloved forest road route located in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, popular among cyclists and nature lovers. Spanning 9.8km with a 569m elevation gain and an average gradient of 5.8%, it attracts many enthusiasts looking for a challenging road bike climb (hill climb). The journey begins through quiet residential streets and gradually ascends, offering a unique experience as the scenery shifts from everyday landscapes to rich, natural forest environments. While there are no formal observation decks, several open stretches along the path provide breathtaking vistas of Lake Kawaguchi and the majestic Mt. Fuji.
The area is surrounded by the rich natural environment at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Nishikawa Niikura Rindo is maintained as a route that utilizes the local topography and is even recognized as part of the Olympic Legacy Road area. The route serves to promote the charm of the Mt. Fuji foothills through outdoor activities while preserving the local natural landscape. The transition from residential areas to the forest road highlights the close-knit relationship between the local community and the surrounding nature.
The greatest highlight of this route is the changing scenery during your ride. The most striking moment occurs after conquering the steep approximately 1km climb that leads from the residential area into the forest. Near the 8.5km mark, you will find a final vantage point where the sense of accomplishment is heightened by the view. Scattered points along the way allow you to glimpse the vast expanse of Lake Kawaguchi and the grand silhouette of Mt. Fuji. Additionally, the latter part of the course features downhill sections, allowing cyclists to enjoy a sense of release after the intense climb.
While the route can be enjoyed year-round, the best months to visit are March, April, May, September, October, and November. In spring, you can enjoy the fresh greenery, while autumn offers vibrant seasonal colors. We recommend cycling during daylight hours to ensure better visibility of the road surface and to fully appreciate the changing scenery. Please be mindful of sudden changes in weather and temperature.
The primary activity here is cycling, specifically hill climbing on a road bike. The first part of the course includes a challenging 1km steep section, followed by more gradual slopes. This contrast between the intense initial climb and the easier subsequent sections provides a strategic and satisfying experience for cyclists. Note that some sections are narrow, so please be cautious when passing oncoming vehicles or other cyclists. It is a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Nishikawa Niikura Rindo is part of the 'Olympic Legacy Road Area,' and several other attractive routes are nearby, such as Doshi-michi, Mikuni Pass, and Nishihama Pass. The Fujikawaguchiko area also features numerous facilities and restaurants that serve as great bases for sightseeing, making it easy to combine a cycling trip with exploring the Mt. Fuji region.
Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists. Due to the elevation changes, please bring clothing suitable for temperature shifts, as well as water and snacks for energy. As the road can be narrow, please ride safely and watch for oncoming traffic. When using nearby facilities, we recommend carrying both cash and credit cards. As this is a natural forest road, please follow local etiquette by taking your trash home and protecting the environment. Please note that English-language signage and staff support are not available on this specific route.
