Nishi Shiiya Falls is a grand waterfall located in Kusu Town, Oita Prefecture, featuring a spectacular drop of 86 meters. Once celebrated as the greatest waterfall in the Chinzei region, it is now recognized as one of the 'Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls,' representing one of the most iconic waterfalls in Western Japan. The sight of water plunging down the sheer cliffs is incredibly dynamic, creating an overwhelming sense of presence alongside the surrounding natural environment.
This waterfall is part of the famous 'Usa San-taki' (Three Waterfalls of Usa), alongside Higashi Shiiya Falls and Fukukino Falls. Historically, it has been a renowned scenic spot, once counted as one of the 'Sixty-six Views of Yabakei.' While the scale of the falls may have changed over time due to local development, the current landscape maintains a beautiful and well-preserved natural aesthetic. The greatest appeal lies in the striking contrast between the brilliant white of the water rushing down the near-vertical cliffs and the dark textures of the surrounding rock faces. After a short, well-maintained walk from the parking area, you will reach the observation deck in just about 3 minutes. From this vantage point, you can capture the full panorama of the falls and feel the direct energy of the descending water. The changing seasonal vegetation also adds a beautiful layer to the scenery throughout the year.
Nishi Shiiya Falls displays a different face in every season. The periods of fresh greenery in spring and vibrant autumn foliage are particularly stunning, as the colors of the forest complement the white cascade perfectly. For the best photography, visiting during bright daylight hours is recommended, as the movement of the water appears most vivid. While the site is open at all times, the scenery is most impressive on clear, sunny days when the light enhances the water's texture.

While the path to the observation deck is well-maintained, those wishing to explore closer to the base of the falls will encounter more rugged natural terrain. The area around the falls is dotted with other spots that showcase the rich natural beauty of Oita Prefecture. A popular route for nature lovers is to visit the other members of the 'Usa San-taki' group, such as Higashi Shiiya Falls and Fukukino Falls. Additionally, Oita is famous for its many hot spring (onsen) areas and scenic landscapes, making it easy to combine a visit to the waterfalls with a relaxing soak in a nearby hot spring town.
As this is a natural site, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers) and clothing suitable for outdoor activities. Although the path to the observation deck is relatively easy to navigate, the ground may be damp or uneven, so stable footwear is essential. Please respect the environment by taking all trash home with you and adhering to any restrictions regarding the surrounding flora and rock formations. There are no entrance fees for the area, but please prepare accordingly for any personal needs such as food or drinks.
