The NYK Rubber Museum, located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa, is a corporate museum operated by the NYK Group. It serves as a gateway to understanding the history of maritime transport, which developed alongside the modernization of Japan. The permanent exhibits offer a multi-dimensional look at the journey of NYK from the Meiji era to the present day, utilizing a rich collection of photographs, scale models, and video footage to bring history to life.
Originally opened in 1993 as the 'NYK Historical Museum' within a warehouse in Naka-ku, Yokohama, the facility underwent a significant transformation in 2003. It was redesigned to restore the architectural essence of the original building, earning the 15th BELCA Award for Best Remodeling. This high-quality architectural space was a hallmark of the museum's identity. Currently, the museum has been closed since April 1, 2023, due to local redevelopment plans. It is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2027 under the new name 'NYK Museum,' located within the adjacent Yokohama Building.
The exhibits are organized chronologically through various phases of Japanese maritime history:
Prior to the closure, the facility featured an orientation corner with approximately 1,500 maritime-related books and a museum shop selling original merchandise. The upcoming reopening is expected to feature a new exhibition concept focused on the deep history of the shipping industry.
The museum was located in the Kaigan-dori area of Naka-ku, Yokohama, a historic district adjacent to Yokohama Port. The area is dotted with historical landmarks, including the Hikawa Maru (a designated Important Cultural Property). The area is currently undergoing significant redevelopment, with the museum's relocation to a new building planned for 2027.
