Nikko Sugi Namiki, located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a magnificent historic avenue formed by the intersection of three major routes: the Nikko Kaido, the Reihi Kaido, and the Aizu-Nishi Kaido. The history of this avenue traces back to the dedicated planting efforts by the father-and-son duo, Matsudaira Masatsuna and Masanobu, who were loyal retainers of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Over many years, they cultivated these trees, which were eventually donated as a ceremonial path for Nikko Toshogu Shrine. This site holds the rare distinction of being designated as both a "Special Historic Site" and a "Special Natural Monument" in Japan. The avenue serves as a living testament to the deep cultural and historical roots of the region.
As you walk through Nikko Sugi Namiki, you will encounter several natural wonders.
