The Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory (Miyagikyo Distillery) is a premier whisky production hub located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Established in 1969, this distillery serves as Nikka Whisky's second major production site, specializing in the creation of high-quality single malt and grain whiskies. Spanning a vast area of 200,000 square meters, the facility is nestled within a breathtaking landscape surrounded by the Hirose and Shin-kawa rivers. The region is characterized by a misty, humid climate, which plays a crucial role in the aging process of the whisky spirits, imparting deep character to the barrels.
The establishment of this distillery was deeply influenced by the vision of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky. Records suggest that Taketsuru was inspired to build the factory here after being captivated by the flavor of a highball made with the local river water. Often referred to as the "Lowlands of Miyagikyo" to draw parallels with the Scottish landscape, the distillery stands alongside the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido as a cornerstone of Japanese whisky culture. Its international prestige is further solidified by its designation as an SMWS (Scotch Malt Whiskies of the World) accredited distillery.

The facility features specialized equipment essential for the whisky-making process. The most iconic structure is the Kiln Tower, featuring a unique "Pagoda Roof" that serves as the distillery's symbol. Visitors can observe various stages of production, including the distillation building equipped with pot stills, the mash tun area where the initial brewing occurs, and the cooperage where whisky barrels are handcrafted. The grounds also feature the serene Nikka Pond, where visitors can often spot wildlife such as swans amidst the natural scenery.
The distillery offers different charms depending on the season. From October to November, the "Momiji-go" free shuttle bus runs for guests staying at nearby Sakunami Onsen, allowing visitors to enjoy the stunning autumn foliage alongside the distillery views. In the summer, the area around the Shin-kawa river often hosts local events. Tours are typically divided into morning (9:00–11:30) and afternoon (12:30–15:30) sessions. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the contrast between the architectural structures and the surrounding nature.
The Guest Hall offers a chance to browse and purchase finished products, including exclusive items available only at this location. Beyond the manufacturing process, the facility offers guided tours that include whisky tastings, allowing you to connect the science of distillation with the sensory experience of the final product. It is a holistic experience that engages both sight and taste.
Located in western Sendai, the distillery is conveniently close to the Sakunami Onsen hot spring area. A popular travel itinerary involves visiting the distillery and then relaxing in the nearby hot springs. The area is widely recognized for its tranquil riverbanks and the striking historical architecture of the pagoda-style buildings.
As the facility is surrounded by natural terrain, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that photography is restricted in certain areas; please check local signage or ask staff. Since the experience may include alcohol tasting, please observe responsible drinking etiquette. When purchasing souvenirs or participating in tastings, it is helpful to confirm the accepted payment methods in advance.
