Kankan-kyo Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge located in Oita Prefecture. Its name, which evokes the image of a 'rainbow spanning a valley,' reflects its magnificent design. Completed in 1824 (the 7th year of the Bunsei era) during the late Edo period, the bridge is constructed using numerous blocks of Aso welded tuff. Due to its exceptional durability and unique aesthetic form, it has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan. This bridge was built to overcome a difficult terrain point on a vital route within the former Usuki Domain. To connect the settlements of Mie-cho and Usuki, local merchants pooled their resources to fund the construction, overcoming the natural barrier of the valley. Since its completion in 1824, it has served as a crucial link for regional transportation and growth.
